The subject was Heartland Beer, so I drew it with this thought in my mind: "Let's create a new, cool 2007-version heart symbol." However, this was very difficult, and it was hard to get away from the traditional kind of heart symbol. I went through some trial and error before eventually settling on a design that uses the traditional shape. I think the overall picture represents the concept of Heartland Beer, which is "the original values of things that are not at the mercy of fashion or popular opinion." This picture is also a personal favorite. The title should be read as "a new heart," meaning new or fresh heart. My commitment when I drew this picture was to create something for which I could congratulate myself, like: "I love this picture" or "this one is so cool," after completing the work-and that is what I always have in my mind.

My work "Projection" was created based on the concept of the energy hidden in HEARTLAND's bottle and beer. The bottle itself is not directly shown in the picture, but the life (energy) of the land is aggregated within the bottle's silhouette projected by the light. In other words, I wanted to capture what was still alive within the bottle.During shooting, I was really impressed by the subtle movements and shifts in the green visible lights. I released the shutter wishing to create a picture that transfers the emotion derived from the pride of Heartland Beer.

In times of celebrations and delightful events, people loudly open a liquor bottle. For us, opening the seal on a drink has a special meaning. This time I drew exactly that moment of Heartland Beer. I tried not to make it too dramatic because life is not totally filled with delightful events. Even when you are feeling bitter about something, the crown caps on beer bottles will pop.
However, in either case, each of those moments is a happy moment to a greater or lesser extent. It would be a great pleasure for me if those who look at this picture can feel and taste these moments.

I named this picture "Carbonated Bubbles of Heartland Beer" because I sensed some pathos in these carbonated bubbles. First they fizz and burst out refreshingly, but when it comes to an end, bubbles disappear and even the taste changes. I thought "this resembles a person's life," holding a Kaki-pea snack and a beer in my hands. I like this picture very much.

By drawing beer bottles spreading out into all directions, I rendered the great taste that spreads throughout the mouth at the moment of drinking beer. I think the situation when people drink, differs according to each person, but basically, I used beautiful colors to describe a type of beer that can be drunk pleasantly and delectably.

Daily casual scenes change permanently by printing them on film and our memories. Emotions that cannot be fully expressed by photos, emotional gaps caused through drawing pictures, and the "real" feeling produced by once having filtered a subject through my own senses-in other words, "drawing a photo" is my style of creation, and this is reflected well in this piece of work.

I like beer bottles and designs so I look at them often. Most bottles are labeled, but Heartland Beer does not have a label-the bottle itself is embossed-and I feel that the green color of the bottle is very beautiful.
The color of the bottle is green or yellowish-green, depending on the light shining and embossed effects. I feel this slightly bluish-green is deep, but more transparent, and I shot this photo to capture this pure beauty.

I used a method that I really started 20 years ago after meeting the late Mr. Kazuo Toyoda, the founder of encaustic painting, 22 years ago, and studying under him. In these 20 years, I continued drawing by utilizing my own perspective and my wish to render the "Origin" (which we tend to forget) of many things including packages, bottles, cans, and of course the commercially designed, exquisite Heartland bottle. "Heartland Beer" is one of these works.

I applied for this biennale as a printmaker. I started copper-plate engraving seriously five years ago, after being recommended to do by Mr. Koji Ochiai, a printmaker. I think the rough, straight, and direct representation specific to drypoint lets us feel the "Origin" of the subject in terms of the artist’s original senses.

When sunbeams stream through the leaves, the light is shaded and is revealed alternately, and this never stops. I coped the shape of sunbeams and drew them with careful consideration. I never give meanings to my works. Rather, I strive to eliminate meanings. I think what is important is the feeling of some kind of afterglow that remains in the picture, and I would like to focus on how we want to look at the world, rather than how the world can be seen.
